I feel deeply—sometimes too deeply for the world around me. I’m the one who notices when someone’s energy shifts in a conversation. I’ll carry their emotions with me, mull over words I wish I hadn’t said, and replay interactions in my head a hundred times just to figure out what I did wrong—if anything at all.

I’ve always been the fallback friend. The one people turn to when their usual group is busy. I’ve rarely been someone’s first choice. And as I move through my 40s, I’ve come to realize how heartbreaking that really is. I crave connection. I crave a friendship group that checks in just because, that plans coffee catchups and spontaneous days out. A tribe. A circle. A home outside of my home.

But more often than not, I find myself feeling like I’m just too much for people.

Too talkative. Too emotional. Too intense.
Too different.

There’s a deep loneliness that comes with being different—especially when you don’t always understand why. I try so hard to be kind, to be thoughtful, to show up. But I’m still left wondering why that effort isn’t reciprocated. Why I’m not someone people want to stay in regular contact with. Why I seem to slip through the cracks of people’s lives so easily.

And I’d be lying if I said it doesn’t hurt. It does. Seeing people I thought I was close to meeting up without me, sharing inside jokes online, taking those picture-perfect selfies—it stings. It makes me question myself. Am I broken in some way? Is there something about me that’s just… not enough?

The impact on my mental health is real. Some days it feels like everyone else got the handbook on how to build deep, lasting friendships—and I’m still fumbling through the preface.

But amidst all of this, there is a light: my family.

They are my anchor. They love me wholly and unconditionally. They see my quirks and my chaos and my heart—and they stay. For that, I’m so grateful. They remind me that I’m not alone, not really. And they remind me that I am enough, even when the world makes me feel otherwise.

Still, I hold onto the hope that one day I’ll find that friendship group.
